Mutual Aid in Greater Uki
We are about to share an exciting report, led by Plan C board member Dr Claire McLisky, on how people in Greater Uki band together to help each other during tough times. This project, funded by Groupe URD as part of a global study, dives into the real stories of neighbours stepping up for one another during crises. After speaking with 29 locals, including community members, emergency services, and government reps, the report uncovers amazing examples of mutual support—like spontaneous flood rescues and organised groups such as Resilient Uki and other local resilience teams.
A standout idea in the report is “thick reciprocity,” which is all about the strong community spirit of kindness and working together. It also highlights how the timing of disasters can shape the way people respond and calls for better teamwork between grassroots groups and official Disaster Management Services. Some practical suggestions include creating better ways to stay in touch, formally involving local groups in disaster planning, and giving communities the tools and resources they need to make a difference.
A version of the report will be available next year. Meanwhile, you can read more about it here. Watch this space!
