Adaptive, creative and resilient: How the Byron Shire is stepping up to the COVID challenge

Hello,

If you wonder what Resilient Byron is about, we invite you to check this article by Mandy Nolan, published in the Echo. In a nutshell, we aim to build the resilience and regenerative capacities of the Byron Shire (and beyond).

As we see it, to be resilient, communities need to have satisfied their needs related to access to food, water, housing, health, safety and energy.

But the 'how' counts as much as the 'what', and this is where regenerative considerations come in.

Regenerative communities ensure that they leave more than they take from the environment, but also from others, and from themselves. Cooperation and connection are rewarded. This creates abundance rather than depletion, allowing them to live within their natural and social limits, as well as resilience, allowing them to bounce off and adapt in times of disasters and crisis.

We were initially led by an 8 to 10 years transformative vision for our region, but it was evident that with the COVID-19 and economic crises, Resilient Byron had a role to play here, and now. We’ve therefore shifted gear, but we remain resolutely driven by a willingness to transform the Byron Shire (and beyond) to become truly regenerative and resilient, long after these crises have ended.

However and considering the urgency of the current situation, we now focus on:

1) providing this noticeboard of trusted community information for the region;

2) connecting community organisers, community projects and small businesses to create new resilient and regeneration projects together; and

3) helping residents setting-up neighbourhood support groups.

At the end of her article, Mandy asks “while you are at home, why not start working on building your own neighbourhood support group?” Yes why not indeed? Your neighbours will (secretly) appreciate it, and it will make you happy! We’ve put together some resources to help and inspire you, check them out here.

Meanwhile, be encouraged by the information we have gathered in this noticeboard. It clearly shows that our community is adaptive, creative and resilient. Let this fill our cup.

This is our second noticeboard post so it provides only a partial picture of all of the good things happening in the Byron Shire (and beyond). It is only as good as the information we know of. If you have any announcements, information or resources you would like to share, or if you, or your business, or someone around you is doing something that helps build the resilience and regeneration of our community, please let us know at info@resilientbyron.org or in the comment below.

We will be updating this noticeboard regularly, so be sure to check back in for the latest information.

We look forward to hearing from you,

The Resilient Byron team (aka your neighbours)
