Cyclone Alfred community updates from across the Northern Rivers Update #1

Update #1

These reports come from CCR (Community Carers and Responders), Plan C’s network of volunteers who provide on-the-ground updates during emergencies across the Northern Rivers.

Alstonville (close to Teven)

- We still have power. (Parts of Alstonville are out, I believe.)

- Moderate rain and gusty winds.

Bangalow

- Power out since around midnight.

- Wind and rain strong through the night.

- Some trees down in the area.

- Relatively quiet at the moment with some intermittent strong winds.

Blue Knob (top of Websters Creek/Leycester Creek catchment)

- Power out today.

- Heavy rain.

- Moderate to strong winds.

- Creeks were high yesterday at 4pm.

Byrrill Creek

- Power out.

- Doing a road check.

- Generator on and off.

- Radios checked.

- No access out or in for Byrrill Creek.

Coopers Shoot

- Power out since midnight.

- Mobile tower in and out.

- Lots of wind and rain overnight.

- Quiet at the moment.

Corndale

- Just lost power.

- Windy and medium rain.

Coorabell

- Power is out since yesterday evening.

- Wind and rain gusty.

- Trees down.

Dunoon

- Power out.

- Heavier winds started early morning but not constant.

- Moderate rain.

- Measured over 100mm in the gauge.

Evans Head

- High winds with heavy to moderate winds.

- Residents sandbagging.

- Comms and power on.

- People taking in evacuees from Woodburn & Doonbah.

Ewingsdale

- No power.

- Some trees down, one on a power line.

- Entrance into Byron almost impassable at Belongil turnoff.

- Water building in creeks.

Federal

- Power is out.

- Small trees down.

- Moderate winds, wet.

Goonellabah

- Relatively strong winds, medium to heavy rain.

- Trees down on power lines.

- Power and water are still on.

- Little to no traffic on the roads.

Huonbrook

- “A lot of water coming from the upper catchment.”

Lismore Heights

- Power and water still on.

- Medium to heavy rain.

- Occasional stronger gusts of wind.

- Stay safe everyone!

East Lismore

- Plenty of rain and wind but not disastrous.

- Power and water still okay.

M1 Motorway

- CLOSED in both directions from Chinderah to Ewingsdale.

Main Arm Valley

- Power out.

- Trees down.

- Brunswick River upper catchment flowing fast.

- All causeways over.

- Completely isolated.

- UHF radio check at 8:30 AM – no urgent announcements.

Minyon

- Everyone safe, many near misses with trees.

- Team clearing roads and checking on areas.

- Free Starlink internet at Repentance Creek Hall daily at 10 AM.

- Hall available as a communication hub and shelter of last resort (no power).

- No power in the whole area.

Mullumbimby

- Lost power all over.

- Strong winds and medium rain throughout the night.

- Everything in town is closed except the bakery!

- Parts of Mullum have evacuation advice.

- Power in central Mullum just came back on.

- "Our Neighborhood WhatsApp chats are pure gold!"

- New City Road, Mullumbimby: Power out. We're lifting things just in case. No rain or wind right now.

- Jubilee Ave, Mullumbimby: Power is out, water is on. A few cars and emergency vehicles heading in and out of town. Wind and rain mild to moderate after a solid night of both.

- Tallowwood: Power out. River has risen with the parkland near the playground.

Murwillumbah

- Power went out at 1:30 AM.

- Wind and rain intense but eerily calm now.

- Stay safe everyone.

Newrybar

- No power.

- Windy and lots of rain overnight, medium now.

New Brighton

- No power.

- The dune is holding.

- Marshalls Creek is up but not over the banks.

- Mostly wild wind and trees down.

Nimbin

- Power outages, branches and trees down.

- Some clear roads already.

- Strong wind gusts increasing.

- Heavy rain, headwaters expected to get worse.

Ocean Shores

- Steady wind, mild to moderate rain on and off overnight.

- Wind whips up then stills like a fan on oscillate .

- White out towards the sea.

- Power & internet flickers overnight but remained on.

- No rain at the moment.

- Rain kicking off again.

- Wind picking up again now too.

- "Good morning from Rajah Rd – lots of wind gusts & rain, still have power and water."

Possum Creek

- Calm & relatively dry now after gusty winds & rain overnight.

- Creek level high, wouldn’t expect to cross the causeway.

- Power is out.

- No reports of significant problems in WhatsApp network.

- Thinking of all of you in more difficult circumstances .

Pottsville

- High wind and rain.

- Lots of coastal erosion.

- Sea is a maelstrom, breaking 5-6m out to sea.

- Dangerous storm surge.

- Some trees down, SES keeping roads in Koala Beach clear.

Rowlands Creek / Chowan

- Strong gusting winds, heavy rain at times.

- Power out.

- Bridges under water.

Suffolk Park & Byron Hills/Bay

- Suffolk fared well, lots of branches down, significant beach erosion.

- Broken Head Rd closed from Suffolk Park (possible trees down).

- Wind easing, some strong gusts.

- Surprisingly, lots of people walking around.

Skennars Head

- Gale force winds and steady rain.

Suffolk Park

- Lost power last night (around midnight).

- Strong winds and steady rain.

- Wind still strong but no rain at the moment.

- Sharpes Beach severely eroded.
